Here is something that came up once again today while talking to a tanning consumer about tanning and SPF use:
I have found that promoting Moderate, Sensible and Responsible exposure to Ultraviolet light makes a lot more since than trying to regulate our UV exposure with chemicals. Case in point: Studies at multiple levels have proven that chemical sunscreens penetrate the skin, get into the bloodstream and can sometimes be harmful to the human body. Example; A widely-used sunscreen ingredient called Oxybenzone, also known as Benzophenone-3, has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage. This has even been discussed in a study published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). According to findings from the CDC study, Oxybenzone reacts negatively with sun exposure and can have negative impacts on our bodies such as: -Triggering possible allergic reactions, -Forming free radical chemicals that may be linked to cell damage, -Disrupting the hormone system and more. What does this all mean? To me, promoting Moderate, Sensible and Responsible UV exposure inside and out sounds like a GREAT alternative! Maybe that’s why millions of American consumers turn to indoor tanning as an Educated Choice!

I agree Rick. I tell my customers - "I am not sure sunscreens are safe for you - if you think about spreading chemicals all over the largest "organ" of your body so they can soak in through your skin and prevent the body's natural reaction to sunlight.......". So I tell them that I think everything in moderation is the way to go. That I avoid the outdoor sun at peak hours if I can and also avoid sunscreen when I can and tan moderately indoors.
It makes the most sense to me - and when you explain it, others tend to think it makes sense too.

When someone wants convincing that the face products they use are GARBAGE regardless of how much they spend 99% of the time they contain SPF. Just ask them, does it have SPF in it? If it does it's JUNK.
Then they respond WHAT ABOUT CANCER? Respond with What does SPF have to do with cancer other than causing it? That's when you whip out the above info. If they don't buy it hit em with the Vitamin D reality. If UVB is the precursor to Vitamin D and SPF blocks UVB then SPF blocks Vitamin D production which will lead to Vitamin D deficiency which will lead to EXHIBIT A-Z, the list of illnesses and ailments you should have available for display at the drop of a hat. |
