Yeah, I'm thinking of how I could do this and afford it....maybe tell them if they pass the test they will get a .50 raise but they have to stay for longer than 60 days or the cost of the test comes out of their last check.

Not really sure how I would do it,,,,,just thinking out loud but it's definately NEEDED in my salon. It's taken me 3 years to learn all that I have and I hire these girls that know practically nothing about the tanning process.

Our state requires that all employees dealing with customers be certified!

Missy, do the math. The course is $39 per person or $195 unlimited for the year. Let's use round numbers and say that it is $40 and $200. That means up to 5 people are $40 each. If you have more than that, it gets cheaper per person ($200 divided by all the people you can train in a year's time.). If you pay for an extra $0.50 per hour, that's an extra $20 per week. You will have paid them an extra $40 in 2 weeks if they get the pay raise.

That's okay if you want to pay them, but if you are really trying to figure out a way to pay for this, the best way to do it is forget the raise, pay for the course and require them to pass it. If they don't pass it, they are too stupid to work for you. Fire them and hire another one.

Well I would never in a million years leave someone to run my salon that didn't know anything about the tanning process.......

I have trained a few people and it takes at least a month to get them where I want them.

Nope Eb, None of our regulations state they need to be certified. In the employee manuals I put as much info from what I learned from certification that I could but who knows if they read it all.

This employees explanation of what makes a tingle hot was "it's a special lotion with Hot additives". ~jaw dropped~

A few months ago I went over the entire tingle process and so that shows how much they/she listened.

Then it was more embarrassing to have to pick up the conversation to the customer (when I was only there to drop off something) and explain it all because the employee had no clue.

Well that is why I work a lot myself cause I will only let someone work the front if they know what the hell they are talkin about........I have my cousin who started as a bed cleaner in Feb and has been listening to me and I just left her on her own this past Sunday.......She was told that she needed to sound just like me so before I could let her do it on her own, I was here with her listening to everything coming out of her mouth and role playing with me as a customer.....

My employees are trained on everything before they can run shift on their own. I use the certification booklet and then make up my own test and they receive a "Beach Bunns Tanning Professional" certificate. I do this because of a high turn over rate, but all management is professionally certified. My state doesn't require it, but I do. They are even trained on the wrap and the sunless, even if they aren't the ones performing it. They have to be able to educate the customers about it.
