Default Tanning Booth Etiquette

Tanning Booth Etiquette

Unless you have a private indoor tanning booth in your home, chances are you visit a tanning salon to get your fake bake tan. These salons are teeming with people all hoping to get the right shade of color to show off for the summer. As with any public setting, there are rules of etiquette that must be followed and tanning booths are no exception.

Each tanning salon has its own set of rules and regulations so the first thing to do is review these guidelines and ask any and all questions before you begin tanning. If it’s your first time and you want to make the best of it, visit the tanning salon a day or so before you plan to tan so that you can get a feel for the salon’s atmosphere, facilities, customers and the employees. Ask for a tour if possible so that you are familiar with how the process works.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to etiquette and tanning is to be mindful of how much time you spend in the tanning room. To avoid being rushed, schedule your tanning session in the morning when the salon has just opened or other times when there aren’t many customers. When the tanning salon gets overcrowded, time is limited and people hate to wait longer than they have to.

The best way to save time while heading for a tanning bed is to come fully prepared. Some people take forever in a tanning room because of the time it takes for them to get undressed and organized prior to tanning. Arrive in clothing that is easy and fast to remove and keep jewelry and other accessories in your purse. Put those on after your tanning session so you don’t spend precious minutes taking those off, too. Soon as you’re undressed - whether it’s nude or with minimal clothing - you should only need about 5 minutes to apply any sun care products to your body. Be sure to stay in the tanning room only for as long as you have it reserved for. It is extremely rude to take up extra time when someone else is waiting on you. After your session has ended, it should take you an additional 5 minutes to get dressed and exit the room so the next person can go in. Clean up any messes you’ve made and unless there is an employee present to clean the tanning bed when you’re done, make sure your tanning bed is clean - especially if you’ve tanned in the nude (hygiene purposes of course).

Some tanning salons have mirrors in the tanning rooms and some don’t. While it is convenient to take a look at your new tan after stepping out, some salon owners have found that having mirrors encourages customers to take longer in the tanning rooms. Either way, most tanning salons have washrooms where you can take all the time you want to check out your tan, put on jewelry and other accessories, fix your hair and makeup, and anything else you need to do to freshen up before leaving.

It may sound embarrassing to exit a tanning room without completely cleaning up and getting yourself together but things go much faster when each person has exited the tanning room on time and handles his/her business in the washroom where there isn’t a line of people waiting to use the facilities.
