Don't get in the habit of giving away everything for free! Don't be a pushover owner.

Top 10
1. Location is critical - it'll make or break you 90% of the time. But that doesn't mean getting a spot in the highest rent district in the city makes you a "lock"! 2. ABSOLUTELY HAVE A LOT OF CASH!!!! If you think you are going to open a salon on 20K and average credit - forget about it! This is a BUSINESS and a risky one at that! Have GREAT credit, a relationship with a banker and a BUNCH of cash - then maybe, just maybe - you can pull this off and make it a profitable BUSINESS. 3. Employer/employees -- Good one. Indeed, you are their boss and their success impacts your livelihood. Know how to manage and motivate people. 4. Track and Analyze everything!! Business is about numbers - not intuition. Keep track, then look at what you track and figure out what it means! Can't just look at the daily sales and know if you are ok or not! 5. Understand what it means to be profitable. In this industry, at this time - that means levels of equipment and a STRONG SALES ability. Have to WORK it, squeeze every dime out of every sales opportunity. 6. Advertise, Adapt and Analyze -- more analysis. Can't know what works and what doesn't -- if you don't try to track and analyze it! How do people hear about you, what gets them in the door, what specials attract them?? SHould you double your ad size in this coupon mag -- or spend the money emailing your data base? Have to KNOW which of those is working for you! 7. Anyone............?? |

- Have a sound financial system. To track your cashflow eg.
- Do market research about the potential in your chosen area - Have a vision where you wanna be in let's say 5-10 years and the small steps in between - Decide 'what' you want to be and live (up) that dream (do you want the upscale salon with all the bells and whistles then you have to get the fancy beds and decor, or do you want to be the price cutter that gives just enough quality for the low price or anything in between) - Do research so that you know what you are talking about. How does the tanning process work, what happens to the skin, why are lotions important, what is the difference in lamps, etc. etc. - Make sure your staff knows that too - Train train train your staff. Not only in selling but also in people's skills - .... there must be many more LOL

my big one is demographics, you've gotta do the research and know your market. Then go with a location and lots of cash.
