One of the mantras chanted by the AAD and others that want to scare people away from the sun is, "You can get all the vitamin D you need getting a little sun on your hands and face, 10 or 15 minutes, 2 or 3 times a week."
Has anyone tested this to see if it is true? Well, not directly. At least, I have been unable to find anything that has been published to back this up. However, Bruce Hollis did look at it indirectly last year in a study he conducted on vitamin D. Dr. Hollis conducted a study of vitamin D levels in sun exposed persons living in Hawaii and compared them to lactating women that were taking either 400IU or 6,400IU of vitamin D supplementation orally. I encourage you to follow the link and read the paper. It was comparing oral supplementation to sun exposure as a source of vitamin D. However, the part that caught my eye when reading this was, there were people in the study with serum 25(OH)D levels of as low as 11ng/ml. "In order to participate, volunteers had to have met the entrance criteria of the following: a self-reported sun exposure time of three or more hours per day on five or more days per week for at least the preceding three months." Skateboarders and surfers that spent 3 to 4 hours in the sun, 5 days a week only exposing their face and hands, were vitamin D deficient--and this was the Hawaiian sun. What chance does someone in the midwest have of getting adequate vitamin D levels from just casual sun exposure 3 times a week? The paper also looked at skateboarders and surfers that spent the same 3 or 4 hours, 5 times a week in the sun without covering up. Those that had practically full body exposure (wearing swimwear) had levels as high as 71ng/ml. The same was true for the women taking oral supplements. Those taking only 400IU of vitamin D were as low as 12ng/ml while those taking 6,400IU were as high as 77ng/ml. This study indicates (among other things as well) that you need much more than incidental sun exposure in most of the world to get adequate levels of vitamin D. Bruce Hollis, Ph.D. is on staff at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC. He is Professor of Pediatrics And Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology as well as Director of Pediatric Nutritional Sciences. He has over 30 years of studying vitamin D and nutrition and is one of the world's leading experts in the area with more than 150 published papers on the subject.

Most people have been "conditioned" to believe everything a doctor tells them.
