A recent article in the Oxford Journal reports that vitamin D deficiency was common in patients taking 800IU of vitamin D daily.
So much for just drinking a couple glasses of milk to get your D.

Even if you take vitamin D pills, don't you need sunlight to activate it or something? And why in the world would you take a pill full of artificial chemicals when you can get it naturally? People suck

Sunlight isn't required to activate the vitamin D. Sunlight converts cholesterol (7-dehydrocholesterol) in the skin to pre-vitamin D3 and then, through a heat based reaction it is converted to D3. This D3 that is made from UVB exposure is efficiently regulated in that any excess that is made is destroyed by further UVB exposure. Any more than is needed at the time is stored in fat cells. D3 in the blood is attached to Vitamin D binding proteins and carried to the liver. It is then changed (hydroxylated) in the liver to 25(OH)D and this is the most common form of vitamin D that is measured to determine deficiency. This is further changed in almost every cell in the body but circulating forms are changed in the kidneys to 1,25(OH)D. This is the active form and what is utilized by the body. It is what attaches itself to vitamin D receptors found all over the body.

The bottom line is we can get too much Vitamin D in pill form, it can be toxic, and it can damage the liver. Your cannot get toxic levels of Vita D form the sun the body will not allow for that.
My choice is the way my body was designed to get it….. By the sun. |
