Default Dermatologists' Seal-for-Sale Program Stirs Recriminations

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., March 13 -- The American Academy of Dermatology is locked in a furor with a subset of its membership over whether to sell its name, prestige, and a special seal for endorsement of commercial sunscreens.

So, if a pharmaceutical company wants their product to have the AAD's "Seal of Recognition" (cleverly worded to not say approval, but just imply it) they pay a $5000 fee, submit their own research showing that their product is effective in blocking UV rays, and then pay $10,000 a year to the AAD.

Consumers assume that it is good for their skin since the Derm association is backing it, right? So, how is blocking UV light good for your skin again when it has been shown to actually REDUCE the incidence and severity of melanoma as well as several other types of cancer?

ABSOLUTELY! Lets get all this out in the open for everyone to see and hear. Can't trust a doctor unless one feels they are honest and have integrity. Think I'll start asking customers that tell me their Derm told them not to tan if their Derm approves of selling the very Seal that approve his practice, to just about anyone with $10,000.
